Design Thesis

During my final year at George Brown College, I was provided the task of creating a final design thesis project. The concept was an 8-month long process of creating a design solution for a real-world client and apply the skills I'd acquired over my education career. This project would break down to four months of finding and researching a problem in need of a solution, and 4 months of concept development, exploration, production, and pure design.

HISTORY

In the summer of 2017, I had finished my term at George Brown. Having been burnt out by the end of term assignments, I was in dire need of a vacation. I had wanted to try something fun, like a roadtrip, but without a car, it's difficult and expensive. I had done some research and talked to some friends, and eventually found the business of relocating cars for people (typically snowbirds) through various driveaway services based in Canada and the US.

I had signed up for a few of them, and heard back from Hittheroad/Canada Driveaway. After interviewing with their owner, passing a background check, clean driving record, and passing off personal references, I accepted a drive from Tampa to Toronto. The drive was short (just three days), but a great way to unwind. I was hooked. I did another longer one, Portland, OR to Toronto. 8 days from the shores of the Pacific, through the desert and canyons of Utah, up the mountain of Colorado.

Having used the service, interacted with management, and explored their digital media presence, I was well aware of some issues the client was facing. I figured this would be a great branding opportunity to try and turn some of the problems that they have to new solutions, as well as flexing my marketing and creative muscles to engage a new audience.

Relo is that solution.

BRAND GUIDE

From start to finish, this 44-page document walks the client through everything from brand message, tone of voice, photography, interior art design, website design, product packaging - everything. It's presented in a fun, bright, and colourful style matching the tone and message of the rebrand.

Driver Box

The drivers box is a simple pre-drive deliverable. The concept behind the box is that this will be waiting for the drivers for them when they reach their location for the car pickup. The package will contain items the user can take advantage of them to improve their driving experience.

Route Guide

Also included in the driver box, the Route Guide is curated seasonally for the 3 most popular routes in North America, the route guide acts as both a frequently asked questions, and service guide. It's main focus is to provide fun and unique experiences to take the thought out of trip planning. Each city along the way has 4 things to see, 4 places they should eat, and a hotel that has an agreement for discounted stays to keep the trip easy and affordable.

Photo Book

To act as a post-trip leave-behind, the Photobook is a simple and effective marketing tool that also gains further profit. The client links their Instagram account with our service and using a specific hashtag during their trip (customizable or generic), and a photobook would be created by the photos posted on their feed. The book would be delivered shortly after they reach their destination. Customization options are available, or images will be automatically added to the book based on the hashtag.
